Biography

Christie Jia Wen Carrière (she/her)—or Chris—is a visual artist, illustrator, and graphic designer based in Toronto/Tkaronto. Her work centres around communication, connection, relationships—and often the lack of them. Grasping at unraveling threads of belonging and identity, she uses her art to explore both the ecosystem around her and her own inner worlds. Outside her art and design work, she works in community-based arts and cultural programming as a method of placemaking and relationship building.

Currently, Chris works as a Communications Coordinator at Culture Days and assists as a Mentor for Apathy Is Boring’s RISE Toronto program. She also freelances as an illustrator and graphic designer, her work has been commissioned by Living Hyphen Magazine, CBC Life, Evergreen Brickworks, AsialisciousTO, and more.

Between 2019–2021 she worked as Co-Creative Director at Tea Base, a grassroots community art space located in West Chinatown. In this role, she had the opportunity to collaborate with many local artists and organizations such as AGO All Hours, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Mayworks Festival, Long Winter TO, the Alberta Association of Artist-run Centres (AAARC), and ArtworxTO. In 2022, she was also a facilitator for Planting Imagination, a community-centred design project created by Linda Zhang and hosted by Toronto Metropolitan University.

She obtained a BFA from OCAD University, graduating with distinction in 2021, and she is currently pursuing an education in Graphic Design from George Brown College.
